About

The Highcroft Hurricanes Swim Team (HHST) was formed in 2007 and is a member of the Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA), the largest summer recreational youth swim league in North Carolina, comprised of approximately 86 swim teams throughout Wake County.

The philosophy of our team is to emphasize personal improvement and have fun! As in any competitive sport, swimmers will receive recognition for placing in swim events, but swimmers will also be encouraged to continually improve by recognizing their “personal best” times. Swimmers will learn commitment to themselves and their team. HHST also offers a number of social events throughout the season, and is a great way for both kids and parents to foster friendships within the community. The Highcroft Hurricanes Swim Team is a uniting force within our community.

Parent's Swim Team Primer

Want to know more about how swim team works? Check out the helpful information below:

Registration

Swim team registration typically opens up in early to mid-April each year. You will see signs up around the neighborhood & we will send notices via email and HHST social media when registration opens. Practices typically start in mid-May, but know that you are always welcome to register and join the team even after the season starts (the more the merrier!).

Volunteering

HHST is a volunteer run team led by parents within the neighborhood. Organizing the team and running swim meets takes a lot of helping hands. For this reason, we ask that each Family participating in HHST contribute by volunteering for a certain number of "Volunteer Points" each season. Don't worry, there are a number of different ways to volunteer and we will show you the ropes! Check out our Volunteer page for more details on Volunteer roles and how the "Volunteer Points" system works.

Swimming Safety Test

For safety reasons, HHST requires that all new swimmers aged 9 or under (as of June 30th of each year) complete a swimming safety test with one of our Coaches prior to the beginning of the season. The test consists of having your child swim 1 lap unassisted, without stopping on the bottom or side of the pool. Safety testing is typically done on the weekend of the kick-off party as well as the first week of practice (see the Swim Team Calendar for full details). Even if you aren't certain your child can complete the test, feel free to register for the team. We are happy to issue a refund in the event your child does not pass the safety test.

Practice & Meet Schedule

HHST holds practice every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday afternoon as well as Saturday mornings. Practices are not required, but swimmers are encouraged to attend as often as possible. Swim meets are held on Tuesday evenings (7 total meets including a "practice" meet). Please see the Practice schedule and the Swim Team Calendar for additional details. If you have never been to a swim meet before, don't worry - we have a great Swim Meet 101 page to help you know what to expect.
